The part-time professors union at University of Ottawa represents more than 700 part-time professors. According to the union, over half of first and second-ear students are taught by part-time professors. At UofO the union states that job security is precarious, and the hiring process requires more transparency.

The union also said workload has increased significantly without additional compensation. The proposed increases will bring part-time professor wages up to the average rates of other universities. The university’s last offer was below the rate of inflation. In addition the union appeals to the university to provide benefits on par with full-time employees.

The contract with the university has been expired since Aug. 31, 2016. The strike scheduled to begin October 30th was averted just hours before faculty were to go on the picket line.
